Maid/Queen Application
* Important - Please review this information and then complete the application below. Your signature denotes you have read and understand the information below. *
The Krewe of Christopher welcomes your interest in having someone serve as a maid or queen. Since 1953, the Krewe has annually brought a first class Mardi Gras Tableau and Ball to our community. Young ladies and their families have long found participation in our ball to be a very rewarding experience.
Maid or queens may be nominated by a relative but the parents or guardians must give permission so please be sure they are aware of the application. We hope this document outlines the information you will need but if you have any questions please direct them to the Krewe President or Captain. Please pay special attention to the Krewe rules regarding age of participation and age of guest. Your application submission denotes your understanding and acceptance of these rules.
Age: Maid candidates must be single, between ages 17-21, and at least a junior in high school as of the night of the Tableau. Queen candidates must be single and must be between 18-25 years old as of the night of the Tableau. The Krewe reserves the right to request verification of age.
Securing Maid Spot: Deadline for applications is October 31, 2024. Our process for securing maid spots has changed slightly. Beginning for 2025 Tableau/Ball the process is as follows:
Members' daughters/granddaughters/nieces: A $500 deposit should be turned in with maid application. Once acceptance of the application and deposit by captain is completed your spot is secured. The only time this would differ is if demand exceeds available spots. In this case, you will be notified on or before November 1. We will follow previously established seniority rules to fill maids (only applies to on time applicants).
Non-member daughters/granddaughters/nieces: A $500 deposit should be turned in with the maid application. You will be notified on or before if your daughter is accepted as a maid.
Deposits are only refundable if the krewe court is full and we are unable to honor your application.
Costumes: Our Krewe is somewhat unique in that maids purchase costumes which are custom made for the theme each year. The dresses serve as a lifelong keepsake. Sketches of the costume are shown to maids so they may choose their costume. Please note that the sketch is just a concept and that every detail may not be the same in the final costume.
The order of costume choice will be as follows:
In order of length of consecutive years of membership by father, step-father, or grandfather (application on time)
In order of application submission for members of less than 3 years consecutive membership (application on time)
In order of application submission for late applications
Costume cost may fluctuate slightly but you can expect the costume cost to be approximately $3100. Payment for costumes will occur as follows: half of dress cost is due at first fitting, half is due when dress is picked up. There is also a one time $175 participation fee which is used to host the Queen/Maid’s luncheon for the following year. The Krewe is actively looking at ways to reduce the dress cost - please contact the Captain with concerns regarding dress cost.
Escorts: The person submitting the application will be the escort for the Maid or they may denote another person to escort the maid. Regardless, the persons submitting the application (father, step-father, or grandfather) and the escort must be members of the King’s Club.
Fittings: The captain will inform you of time and location of the first fittings and the krewe’s seamstress will coordinate any further fittings. Alterations to the costume based on fit or costume content can only be done by the krewe seamstress.
Gift Exchanges: The exchange of any gifts is totally voluntary. Any exchange of gifts prior to the Reveal Party should be done in secret. The Captain can facilitate this if needed.
Reveal Party: This year, the reveal will be held at the Krewe’s dance on Monday, March 3. Formal attire is required. Maids will find out the identity of their Duke at this event. The Captain will announce the Royal Court and they will be toasted. Traditionally, a Maid and her Duke exchange a small gift at this event.
Queen’s Brunch/Tea: A Brunch or Tea is hosted by the prior year’s Queen and Maids to honor the current Queen and Maids. You will receive an invitation to this event well in advance. Traditionally maids exchange gifts amongst themselves at this event.
Additional Events: Any additional events held by individuals for members of the Krewe of Christopher Royal Court should be cleared in advance by the President of the Krewe.
Rehearsal: Rehearsal is crucial to putting on a successful Tableau. You are required to attend rehearsal in order to participate. We have made an effort to condense rehearsal as much as possible. You will receive a rehearsal schedule which outlines the time practice for current maids will begin. We ask that you be dressed with headpieces, collars, and shoes for the time noted. No alcohol consumption is allowed during rehearsal by Maids.
Guest to the Ball: Maids and the Queen are encouraged to invite guests to the Tableau and Ball. Guests to the Ball must be aged 18 and older on the night of the Ball. The Krewe does allow maids to participate in the Tableau and Ball at age 17. The Krewe also allows the Queen and Maids to each have one guest who is aged 17 if they desire. However, the Krewe does not condone the consumption of alcohol by anyone under the age of 21. No exceptions for additional guests aged 17 will be considered. The guardians of the Queen or Maid must sign a waiver which expresses understanding of the Krewe’s position and releases them from liability for actions resulting from consumption of alcohol by individuals under the age of 21. Only individuals whose waivers have been received prior to the ball will be admitted. The Board reserves the right to reject waivers.
The Krewe takes the position that the Ball is an adult krewe function for our members. Our maids and their companions are guests at our ball. As members of the Krewe, we have an obligation to be observant that all our fellow members and guests are enjoying themselves appropriately and not ruining the fun for others, but it is not our place to be chaperones. The Krewe does employ security personnel but the ultimate responsibility for maids and their companions is their guardians.
The Krewe sees this as an opportunity for our krewe members, spouses and their daughters or granddaughters to enjoy their time together in an adult environment and create great memories. The Krewe of Christopher has a reputation and tradition of putting on one of the classiest Mardi Gras events in Thibodaux and hopefully the surrounding area. We take much pride in the manner in which we celebrate Mardi Gras and take seriously how we are perceived in the community.
